Ibolya Daróczy experienced the horrors of 1956 in Miskolc, where she lived and worked as an accountant in a small factory in the city. She was caught in the crossfire of a secret-police attack on anti-government demonstrators and nearly lost her life. Afterwards, she fled alone, with just a small briefcase to her name, to Austria in early 1957. She met her fiancee and settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where she took an active part in the Hungarian community.
