Miklós Schlóder, DP Generation

Miklós Schlóder's family background was German (Swabian) and as a result of Hungary's allegiance with Germany during WWII, his family faced persecution, internal deportation or worse after the Axis powers lost the war in 1945. His mother twice escaped being deported to a labor camp in the USSR. His father was already in a prisoner-of-war camp in Siberia and was only able to reunite with his family in 1948 in Germany.

Miklós escaped Hungary with his mother and ended up in Germany before arriving to the US in 1950. Starting life in the U.S. was difficult without English skills and money, and his mother was severely depressed. The Hungarian community and scouting in New Brunswick provided a strong community background for them.
